Everyone Loves Sophie

by Annalise on December 20, 2009

Sophie, my cousin’s daughter, is visiting us in Kathmandu this month and we’re so enjoying her stay. There are quite a lot of people in Nepal from the Netherlands and they have an excellent reputation in the international development field. That may have helped Sophie feel even more at home and certainly she’s connected immediately with the Dutch folks in the Himalayan Hash House Harrier (H4) running (and drinking) group. But even beyond that, she attracts attention!

It could be her blond hair, her confident quiet demeanor, her lovely smile or that spark in her eyes but the local people we’ve run into absolutely love her! We’ve been out of the city and everyone has gone out of their way to meet Sophie, give her the best treatment, get to know her name and recently even take photos of and with her.

In Chitwan National Park, the waiter at the hotel restaurant always welcomed ‘Sophia’ immediately upon seeing her. Inside the park a group of Nepali women were taking photos at the crocodile breeding ponds and they turned their cellphone cameras right up to Sophie, insisting she pose for them and among them as they giggled and cautiously explored their thoughts in English “very beautiful!”.

When she ran her last scheduled H4 run yesterday, she received a down-down (beer and song) for being the best leaver ever – hard to explain, you had to be there but it was heartfelt. Well as least as heartfelt as those folks get! Certainly the beer was good and welcome after our 2 hour run.

And we get it, we love having Sophie here too. She is a fantastic house guest as we’d discovered twice previously in Calgary but she is also a great travel mate. And she attracts some pretty exceptional treatment.

Happily travels in the Sophie-zone!
