Holland by Canal Boat

by Annalise on April 29, 2010

I’m writing from central Amsterdam aboard what we’ve dubbed the ugly duckling – a rented canal boat about 11 meters long. It shows its rental status by the scratches and patches on its corners but serves as a great floating apartment from which to see Holland from the waterside -often at elevations above the surrounding country side as 1/2 of Holland lies below sea-level. It certainly isn’t sailing but there is a time for everything. This provides a fantastic platform for Robin to resume his school work and his piping following the walk. He was on deck yesterday with his pipes, getting his cheeks and his lungs back into form and the surrounding boats and houseboat dwellers were calling out in appreciation. Sounds like the break hasn’t done too much harm.

Today we head further north along the canals and then back down through Amsterdam on Saturday. We have the boat for about 10 days total. The landscape so far has been absolutely gorgeous. Windmills, small farms with animals right up along the canal edges, more bicyles than cars (even huge bicycle parks like we would have car parks) the famous gabled homes along the canals in Amsterday and yes, tulips. It is really a lovely place to be in the spring.

Photos to follow. I’m busy embracing my Dutchness!

How cool, Annalise! All those pictures of Holland make me think of my childhood there and the wonderful experiences that went along with all of that.

Have a wonderful time there and enjoy all the beauty of that country!!!!

Love, Ria
